Support for Archbishop Justin Welby after newspaper DNA revelations

There has been an outpouring of support for the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, after revelations in the British Daily Telegraph newspaper that his genetic father was, in fact, Sir Winston Churchill’s private secretary, the late Sir Anthony Montague Browne; rather than his mother’s late husband, Gavin Welby.

Archbishop criticises minimum wage re-brand

An increase of 50 pence per hour in the national minimum wage that employers in the UK must pay their workers has been welcomed by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu. But while welcoming the increase, Dr Sentamu has criticised the British finance minister, George Osborne, for branding the increase as a new Living Wage.

The first recipients of a new set of non-academic awards for outstanding service to the church were recognised in a ceremony at Lambeth Palace yesterday. Archbishop Justin Welby gave out the new awards, which recognise outstanding service in different fields, including those of Archbishop Justin’s ministry priorities.

Archbishop of Canterbury's Chaplain to be new Bishop of Dorking

The Archbishop of Canterbury’s chaplain, the Revd Canon Dr Jo Wells, is to become the next Bishop of Dorking in the Church of England’s Guildford Diocese. Dr Wells will assist the Rt Revd Andrew Watson in leading the diocese, and will have a particular responsibility for nurturing nurture vocations and working with the many schools and colleges in the diocese.

Queen breaks with tradition for Royal Maundy in her 90th year

Queen Elizabeth II has today taken part in the traditional Royal Maundy service but in a break from the usual tradition of visiting a different cathedral each year and selecting recipients from the local dioceses; the Queen held the ceremony in Windsor Castle’s St George’s Chapel and the elderly recipients were selected from throughout England.
