I am overjoyed to be able to send you greetings at this momentous time in the continuing story of God's church in Rwanda. I give thanks to God that through all the pain, suffering, and darkness which you have all been through, this new chapter in your common life is now opening. Shortly after our commissioning as Pilgrims in Rome's St Gregorio's Church (that is where, tradition says, Gregory the Great 1400 years before sent forth Augustine and his 40 monks), we had our first ride in the bus that soon would be our travelling companion through most of our journey to Canterbury. It was a short ride into the heart of the city. We were then led, on foot, luggage in hand, to the fellowship centre of the St Egidio community, a Roman Catholic lay organisation of people from all walks of life who share a common vision of reconciliation, a vision they make real through concrete efforts in the city and around the world.

On Monday 19 May the Archbishop of Canterbury and Mrs Carey attended the Chelsea Flower Show to launch a new rose variety to commemorate the 1400th Anniversary of the arrival of St Augustine in 1997, and herald the 1998 Lambeth Conference. The Cathedral was represented by the Dean and Mrs Simpson and ten choirboys, who performed two specially prepared 'Rose' anthems at the ceremony.

The Anglican-Orthodox informal talks took place in Istanbul from 9 to 11 May. Anglican representatives were invited to the meeting by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, His All Holiness Bartholomaios 1.

Member Churches of the World Council of Churches met in Geneva on 6 May to share their plans for celebrating the Millennium. This was the second information sharing meeting organised by the WCC and it drew together representatives of the Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Protestant and Anglican Churches. The Revd Canon David Hamid, the Director for Ecumenical Affairs for the Anglican Communion Office, spoke about Anglican initiatives for the Millennium at the meeting.

The question of international debt has been identified by all the regional pre-Lambeth 1998 meetings as a major concern for the Anglican Communion. An Anglican bishop, who is currently Professor in Applied Theology at Durham University, has just published a book which provides a challenging theological critique of the issue.
