At the end of the Ash Wednesday liturgy, I'd be at the back door with a big washrag. As people left the church, I'd wipe the ashes off their forehead and remind them of the words of our Lord, 'Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them' (Matthew 6:1).

Challenging the gathered churches with a new vision for Christian identity in the light of religious plurality, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Rowan Williams, visited the World Council of Churches 9th General Assembly in Porto Alegre, Brazil on 17 February and was the keynote speaker at the day's plenary session.

A new body to lead the World Council of Churches (WCC) into the next decade was elected in Porto Alegre on Wednesday. Delegates at the WCC's 9th Assembly also endorsed measures designed to strengthen youth participation in the organization's decision-making.
